Saddle ergonomics the easy way

The saddle width system

Similar to shoe size, the sit bone distance is different for everyone. That is why SQlab offers saddles in different widths to suit the individual anatomy. The sit bone distance can either be measured directly at a local SQlab specialist dealer or conveniently at home with the Family and Friends set. Depending on the riding position and area of use, a certain number of centimetres are added to the determined sit bone width to obtain the optimum saddle width. The more upright the riding position, the wider the saddle needs to be in order to provide as much contact surface as possible.

SQlab step saddle concept

The SQlab saddles are all based on the stepped system, which distributes the pressure evenly on the sit bones and allows for a more comfortable ride. The two-stage wave shape of the saddle adapts to the usually bulbous ischial branches and at the same time relieves the sensitive perineal area. The recess in the middle of the saddle ensures that the blood and nerve supply is optimally maintained. The dip in the middle provides even more space and less pressure in the perineal area. Due to the step system, there is more pressure on the sit bones than they are used to, so a certain familiarization phase is necessary. We recommend 3-4 moderate tours of 30-40 km so that the sit bones can get used to the new load.

The active System,

to relieve the intervertebral discs and sit bones.

This technology is based on the anatomy of the human pelvis. When walking, the pelvis tilts with every step and the spine reacts to this with a compensatory movement in the opposite direction. This natural dynamic is known as pelvic rocking.

In order to relieve and protect the intervertebral discs and facet joints, it is important to maintain this physiological pelvic movement when cycling.

The SQlab active saddle technology ensures that the saddle easily follows the pedaling movement. This mobilizes the intervertebral discs and minimizes pressure on the sit bones. In the sporty saddle models, the damping can be regulated using the three elastomers supplied and adjusted according to personal preference.  The active Comfort technology, on the other hand, is adjusted using the switch function. Here you can choose between the standard active movement and the high active movement in just one turn.

Tips for saddle adjustment

1. Saddle height

The correct saddle height can be determined quickly and easily using the heel method. First sit on the saddle and turn the pedals until one of the pedals reaches the lowest point. Then place your heel on this pedal - your leg should be fully extended. If the knee is still bent, the saddle is too low. If, on the other hand, the pedal is not reached, the saddle is too high. Adjust the saddle height until the heel reaches the pedal and the leg is fully extended. If, despite correct adjustment, you find yourself sliding back and forth while riding and your pelvis tilts sideways, lower the saddle height slightly until your pelvis remains stable and no longer tilts.

2. Saddle angle

An optimum saddle tilt setting starts with a horizontal saddle nose. The tilt of the saddle should point slightly upwards rather than downwards. This inclination supports a stable sitting position, the sit bones are supported by the stepped shape of the saddle and the pelvis remains upright without tilting forward. With a slightly upward-pointing saddle nose, the sit bones can sink even better into the step of the saddle, which also prevents the pelvis from tilting forward.

3. Saddle shift

Here too, the basic setting is to mount the saddle centrally within the marked clamping area. The correct saddle offset influences the optimum power transmission. To achieve this, the pedals should be horizontal. The plumb line is positioned at the lower edge of the kneecap and should run vertically through the pedal axle. If the plumb line is behind the pedal axle, the saddle must be moved further forward; if the plumb line is in front of the axle, the saddle must be moved backwards. After adjusting the saddle offset, it is advisable to check the saddle height again and readjust if necessary.

Please note that these tips are based on theory and the basic setting. We recommend taking a multitool with you during the familiarization phase so that you can adjust the saddle setting directly to your personal needs. It is important to listen to your body when adjusting the saddle.
